The changes of blood antidiuretic hormone (ADH) levels during extracorporeal circulation were examined by highly sensitive radioimmuno-assay and studied the correlation with circulating blood volume, plasma osmotic pressure and left atrial pressure. The preoperative ADH level was 3.0±3.6 pg/ml.

During extracorporeal circulation, ADH level elevated up to 25.3±14.5 pg/ml and returned to the preoperative level 12 hrs after operation. The level of circulating blood volume immediately after operation was essentially same as that of the preoperative period. Plasma osmotic pressure was markedly elevated during extracorporeal circulation and gradually declined to the pre-operative level during 24 hrs after operation.
