  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Penetrating keratoplasty was performed in five eyes with prior serpiginous ulcer with or without preceding Saemisch's corneal section. A better overall clinical outcome was obtained in the latter group.

Experimental corneal ulcer was produced in rabbits by inoculating Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The effects of topical antibiotics with or without Saemisch's corneal section were compared. The corneal section was found not only ineffective as therapeutic procedure but even detrimental as it resulted in strong corneal scar formation.

The surgical opening of the cornea is decid-edly of no value in serpiginous ulcer.
