緒言

　網膜色素変性の統計的観察については，すでに多くの報告がなされているが，そのほとんどは外来患者あるいは一地方に限局したものであり，全国的規模での統計は，盲学校生徒を対象としたものを除いて，いまだ十分な調査は行なわれていない。

　一方，本症の成因解明については，最近，諸家の優れた業績が各方面から相ついで発表され，その努力の実る日も間近いことと思われる。しかし，代表的遺伝病である本疾患の場合には，全国的な調査により本症の実態を把握し，これを優生学的見地から処理することも，臨床的に悲惨な経過を辿る色素変性患者を淘汰する意味で，きわめて重要なことである。

To clarify actual clinical and genetical state of patients of the retinitis pigmentosa in Japan, a statistical research was pursued by means of nation-wide questionnaire. The data on 3430 patients of this disease based on the answers from the eye clinics of university-hospitals and major public hospitals (having more than 300 beds) were analyzed.

A local investigation upon 441 patients of the retinitis pigmentosa, who were residing inIwate Prefecture and visited our clinic during 20 years, was also carried out.

These national and local results were compared and summarized as follows.
