Abstract. Purpose:To report vortex-pattern keratopathy in a case who was receiving peroral nifedipine for systemic hypertension. Case:A 46-year-old male presented with blurring and photophobia in both eyes since 3 weeks before. He had had systemic hypertension since 13 years before and been treated with peroral nifedipine, atenolol, and candesartan for 9 years. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in either eye. Both eyes showed vortex-pattern opacity in the subepithelial corneal layer. Nifedipine was suspected as the probable cause. Discontinuation of nifedipine was followed by decrease of vortex-pattern corneal opacity. Subjective symptoms disappeared 5 months later. Conclusion:This case illustrates that vortex-pattern corneal opacity may develop after peroral nifedipine, which is a cationic amphiphilic preparation.
