Abstract. Purpose:To report the incidence of ocular hypertension following removal of intravitreal silicone oil. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on consecutive series of 120 eyes that received removal of intravitreal silicone oil in the past 101 months. The age ranged from 12 to 83 years, average 51 years. Duration of intravireal silicone oil ranged from 2 to 413 days, average 123 days. Intraocular pressure of 21 mmHg or over was defined as ocular hypertension. Results:Ocular hypertension was present in 26 eyes(22%). The series comprised proliferative diabetic retinopathy 12 eyes, proliferative vitreoretinopathy 8 eyes, and ocular trauma 4 eyes among others. There was no difference regarding duration of intravitreally retained silicone oil between eyes with and without ocular hypertension. Incidence of ocular hypertension was significantly higher in eyes receiving removal of silicone oil using 25-gauge and trauma-induced retinal detachment. Conclusion:Ocular hypertension following removal of silicone oil was independent of intravitreal duration of silicone oil. It was more frequent following removal of silicone oil using 25-gauge needle, presumably resulting in retention of a minute amount of silicone oil.
