Abstract. Purpose:To report the efficacy and safety of 0.2% minocycline ointment for drug-resistant bacteria. Objects and Method:This prospective study was made on 63 eyes of 51 patients scheduled for cataract surgery. All cases showed Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)or coagulase-negative staphylococci(MRCNS)resistant to methicillin from conjunctival scrapings. The bacteria were sensitive to minocycline. All cases received minocycline ointment prior to surgery. Results:Two cases discontinued treatment due to ocular pain. The other 59 eyes proved negative by three consecutive culture of conjunctival scrapings. There was no complication throughout the study. Conclusion:Minocycline ointment is safe and effective for MRSA or MRCNS that is isolated from conjunctival scrapings and that is sensitive to minocycline.
