Abstract. Background:Various ophthalmic disorders may be present in Joubert syndrome. There has been no reported case of microphthalmos or orbital cyst in this syndrome. Purpose:A newborn girl was referred to us under the diagnosis of Joubert syndrome. She had been born after gestation of 36 weeks weighing 2,102 g. She showed dyspnea, decreased muscle tonus, bilaterally enlarged kidney, and molar tooth sign(MTS)of the brain stem by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). Findings:Both eyes showed microphthalmos with microcornea, nystagmus, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, chorioretinal dysplasia, retinal degeneration, macular and optic nerve hypoplasia, and coloboma of optic disc. The left eye showed pseudoptosis and superior-exotropia. Bilateral orbital cyst was present by MRI and echography. Conclusion:This case illustrates that orbital cyst may be present in Joubert syndrome. Orbital cyst may have developed in association with microphthalmos and coloboma of optic disc.
