Abstract. Background:The Japan Ophthalmologists Association have been conducting telephone eye consultation to the general public since 1988. Purpose:To review the telephone service up to 2009 and to present a future outlook. Materials and Method:A total of 14,460 cases have used the telephone service. These cases were analyzed regarding age,sex,domicile,and the content of consultation. Results:About sixty percent of consultants were females. About 20% were aged less than 30 years. Thirty percent were living in Tokyo area. Chief subjects of consultation were about cataract,retinal diseases and glaucoma in the descending order. The number of telephone calls has remained almost stable in recent years. Conclusion:“Telephone eye consultation”offers neutral information and professional advice to the general public. This service promises to be of value further in future.
