Abstract. Purpose:To report on what the patients and their relatives are interested in during explanation before cataract surgery. Subjects and Method:This study was made on 126 patients who were scheduled for cataract surgery at a general hospital in rural area. The series comprised 54 males and 72 females. The age averaged 76 years. Ninety-four cases were receiving cataract surgery for the first time and 32 for the second time. Patients were asked by questionnaire to rate each of 13 items into 5 grades. They were also asked to choose one out of 5 items regarding the motive for deciding to receive cataract surgery. Results:The most interested subject was what the patient has to take care of during and after surgery. The least interested subject was anatomy of the eye. Eighty-six patients(68%)made the decision to receive surgery by themselves. Conclusion:During explanation before cataract surgery,priority has to be given as to how to take care during and after surgery.
