Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy following interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis C. Case:A 56-year-old woman had been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C 10 years before. She received systemic treatment with PEG interferon and ribavirin for 48 weeks. Hypothyroidism developed 7 months after start of treatment with elevated antibody for thyroid-stimulating hormone. She noticed diplopia one year after end of treatment. Findings:Her right eye showed palpebral edema and restricted upward gaze without proptosis. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed hypertrophy of extraocular muscles in both eyes. She was diagnosed with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and was treated by pulsed corticosteroid therapy and radiation. Diplopia gradually decreased and systemic corticosteroid was discontinued 2 months later. Conclusion:This case illustrates that interferon therapy may induce thyroid dysfunction followed by thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.
