Abstract. Purpose:To report the incidence of pterygium in patients receiving cataract surgery in Amakusa Kamishima Island. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 193 patients who were resident in Amakusa Kamishima Island and who received cataract surgery during 2006. The cases comprised 77 males and 116 females. The ages ranged from 50 to 95 years, average 77 years. Another series of 155 patients who received cataract surgery at Kumamoto Citizen Hospital served as control. Results:Pterygium was present in 51 eyes of 42 patients(21.8). It was present in 3 patients(1.9)in the control. The difference was significant(p<0.001). Conclusion:Incidence of pterygium is significantly greater in persons living in Amakusa Kamishima Island than in those in Kumamoto in mainland Kyushu.
