Abstract. Purpose:To report the incidence of bacterial flora in the conjunctival sac in asymptomatic eyes cultivated in five laboratories. Cases and Method:This study was made on 500 eyes scheduled for cataract surgery. The series comprised 201 male eyes and 299 female eyes. The age averaged 73 years. Scrapings were obtained from the conjunctival sac prior to surgery. One hundred samples each were sent to five laboratories for culture and identification of bacteria. Results:Incidence of bacterial organisms was 45, 74, 80, 84 and 89% respectively. Number of strains was 47, 80, 122, 137 and 186 strains respectively. S. aureus, Enterococci and Enterobacter were reported from all the five laboratories. P. acnes was found in 2 laboratories only. S. epidermidis was found in 3 laboratories only. Conclusion:There were differences in the reported rate of detection, type of cultured bacteria, and number of strains from five laboratories. The observed differences may reflect different methods of culture and policy of laboratories. Due attention is necessary in selecting laboratories for bacterial studies.
