Abstract. We reviewed 876 eyes of 438 patients undergoing hemodialysis regarding associated retinal vein occlusion. The series comprised chronic glomerulonephritis 179 cases, diabetic nephropathy 140 cases and others 119 cases. Their ages averaged 62.5 years. Retinal vein occlusion was present in 29 eyes of 26 patients(5.9%). Their ages averaged 62.2 years. The duration of hemodialysis averaged 149months. Branch retinal vein occlusion was present in 24 eyes of 21 patients and central retinal vein occlusion in 5 eyes of 5 patients. These 26 cases had systemic hypertension 24 cases, diabetes mellitus 3 cases, hyperlipemia and collagen disease in one case each. Erythropoietin was being used in 21 cases. The incidence of retinal vein occlusion was higher than 0.3 to 1.0% as reported in literature. Risk factors included systemic hypertension and systemic use of erythropoietin.
