We treated 35 eyes by laser epithelial keratomileusis(LASEK). The spherical refraction ranged from-1.25 to-11.50 diopters(D),average-5.77±2.31 diopters. The cylindrical refraction ranged from-1.25D to-2.25D,average-0.84+0.60D. Unaided visual acuity of 20/20 or over was attained in 31 eyes(89%). The spherical refraction averaged+0.43D after one week,+0.50D after one month,+0.19D after 3months,and-0.11D after 6months. There was no serious intraoperative complication except flap-like detachment of corneal epithelium. Postoperatively, subepithelial opacity developed in 22 eyes(63%),4 eyes of which(11%)developed transient myopia. The findings show that good visual acuity can be expected after LASEK with minimum intraoperative complications. Postoperative subepithelial opacity, which occurs at a high frequency,is a major problem.
