An in vitro experiment was performed to evaluate the efficacy of three irrigation/aspiration tips during aspiration of epinucleus in cataract surgery. Gulf tip has a 0.4mm round orifice,0.3mm diameter bore, and is 35mm long. Athlete tip has a 0.2×0.5mm elliptic orifice,0.5mm diameter bore, and is 47mm long. Conventional tip has a 0.3mm round orifice,0.6mm diameter bore, and is 35mm long. Rate of irrigation was the same between athlete and conventional tips, and was significantly greater with gulf tip(p<0.01). Rate of aspiration was significantly greater with athlete tip than gulf or conventional tips(p<0.01). Each of three tips induced equally small decrease of steady state pressure in artificial anterior chamber. The findings show that gulf tip is most suited for aspiration of epinucleus since it has the largest orifice and no adverse effect on the equilibrium in the anterior chamber.
