We quantitated the glucose in the aqueous humor in 22 eyes of 22 diabetic patients during cataract surgery. Their age ranged from 56 to 90 years, average 74.7±9.9 years. Their fasting blood sugar level ranged from 73 to 387mg/dl,average 171±82mg/dl. Another series of 56 eyes of 56 nondiabetic cataract patients served as control. Their age and blood sugar level averaged 75.5±7.6 years and 95±119mg/dl respectively. Glucose in the aqueous humor averaged 155±41mg/dl in the diabetes group and 91±22mg/dl in controls. The difference was significant(p<0.0001). The glucose in the aqueous was positively correlated with HbA1c value in the blood(p<0.0002). It was correlated neither with blood sugar level, urine sugar level, age, nor with the duration of diabetes. The findings show that glucose in the aqueous reflects the state of control of diabetes mellitus and that it may be related with formation of cataract.
