Purpose:Experimental production of glistening particles in acrylic intraocular lens(IOL)removed 6 years after insertion. Case and Methods:A 86-year-old male underwent bilateral cataract surgery with insertion of acrylic IOL. The IOL had to be removed 6 years later due to decentration. The removed IOL showed 100glistening particles per mm2. We placed the explanted and a new acrylic IOL in saline solution. We then observed the two IOLs by shifting the temperature of the solution from 33 to 27 degrees. Finding:The explanted IOL showed glistening immediately after shifting the temperature. The new IOL showed no glistening throughout. Conclusion:Implanted acrylic IOL may show repeated appearance and disappearance of glistening as long as it stays in the eye. After a while, the IOL may undergo structural changes that facilitate appearance of glistening particles.
