Purpose:The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical effectiveness of selective nerve root block as a treatment for radicular pain in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS).

Methods:We retrospectively investigated the duration of the efficacy of nerve root blocks in 81 patients with LSCS and the patients' clinical course after the block.

Results:It was possible to avoid surgery in 48 of the 53 patients who had a pain-free period for at least 5 days after the selective nerve root block. However, 12 of the 28 patients who experienced a recurrence of radicular pain within 4 days after the block were treated surgerically.

Conclusion:The duration of the effect of a nerve root block is very useful as a predictor of the outcome of LSCS.
