AIMS:The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify factors associated with LBP in the general population.

METHODS:We used the data obtained in a nationwide survey of 4,500 people aged 20 years and over who were selected from the entire population of Japan by stratified random sampling. A self-administered questionnaire consisted of questions regarding LBP, depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and demographic factors.

RESULTS:A total of 2,996 subjects filled out the self-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of LBP was 29.2% among the men and 31.8% among the women. The presence of two or more chronic diseases, a family history of LBP, a low education level, depressive symptoms, and severe perceived stress were associated with LBP.

CONCLUSION:This study determined the prevalence of LBP and identified risk factors associated with LBP in a representative sample of the Japanese population, and it has yielded the epidemiological information required to develop policies for the prevention of LBP.
