The purpose of this study was to clarify the differences between low back pain patients who received and did not receive medical treatment, based on their responses to the Japanese version of the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RDQ). A lumbar spine examination was included, in a general physical examination for local residents, and 433 people (135 male, 298 female;largest age group:60~69 years old) were included in this study. We divided them into two groups, a treatment group and a non-treatment group, according to whether they were being treated. The results of assessment by the visual analog scale (VAS) for low back pain, the X-ray findings, RDQ score, RDQ deviation score, and positive responses to questions on the RDQ were compared between the two groups. The results suggested that low back pain patients receiving outpatient treatment have severer pain and disability than people with low back pain who are not receiving any treatment. There were no significant differences in the X-ray findings between the two groups. Disability to move and impairment of activities of daily living may lead low back pain patients request medical treatment at an outpatient clinic.
