Microglia and astrocytes play important roles in neuropathic pain sensation. Both glia cells express many functional receptors including P2X4, P2X7, P2Y12 receptors, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), cytokine and chemokine receptors, cannabinoid receptor CB2. It is still unknown whether these receptors work dependently or independently. Main factors of internal signaling of these glial cells in neuropathic pain are several mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), which affect the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and proinflammatory cytokines.
