Purpose:We studied postoperative changes in neurological symptoms of intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCT). Objective:Subjects were 37 patients with IMSCT who has been treated surgically. Methods:Lower leg, sensory, and urinary functions were studied preoperatively, immediately after surgery, and at final follow-up. Results:Although 80% of patients deteriorated neurologically immediately after surgery, 90% improved by final follow-up. Compared to preoperative symptoms, final symptoms deteriorated in 65%. Patients in good preoperative stage had good outcomes. Conclusion:Most cases of neurological symptoms are likely to deteriorate sooner or later, so we recommend early surgery.
