Following Ivancovic and Druckrey's original methods, we made transplacentally induced brain tumors in 83 SD-JCL rats by means of intra-peritoneal administration of Ethylnitrosorea (ENU) to the pregnant mother rat on the 13th day ofpregnancy.

Brain tumors have developed in over 90% of the offsprings and so-called "microtumors", smaller than 1 mm in diameter, were found in almost all of the offsprings of 12 weeks of age. All brain tumors which we have investigated in this series were located in the supratentorial region except for 2 microtumors in the infratentorial region. When the brain was divided into four portions such as cortical, subcortical, subependymal, and extracerebral regions, microtumors were seen most in the subependymal region. In addition, approxi-mately one third of the microtumors in our series were multiple.

Histological diagnosis has been obtained in ac-cordance with the classification of the experimental brain tumor by Zülch. Most of the microtumors were classified as oligodendrocytoma-like tumor and oligo-astro mixed glioma. These microtumors seemed to be infiltrated to the white matter from the subependymal region. As the microtumors was growing to the macrotumor, the marginal zone of the tumor revealed mitotic change and proliferation of the capillary endothelial cells. In general, at the stage of microtumor, the structure of the tumor cell were neither pleomorphic nor anaplastic but isomorphic. Pleomorphic or anaplastic cell structure has been visualized in some of the offsprings older than 12 weeks of age.
