The authors analysed the fatty acid composition in 25 cases of brain tumor tissues by gas chromatog-raphy and compared the results with those of normal grey matters and white matters. Ten kinds of fatty acid from myristic acid to arachidonic acid were identified and analysed.
In the brain tumor tissues, linoleic acid was mark-edly increased compared with normal grey or white matters. Such increase of linoleic acid was not con-sidered to be the result of richness of the plasma in tumor tissues which has a quantity of linoleic acid. Because, the tissues of arteriovenous malformation had not such increase of linoleic acid.
And the necrotic fluid of glioblastoma multiforme had only the trace of linoleic acid. So the increase of linoleic acid in tumor tissues was considered to have some relation to the growth of the tumors.
In tumor tissues, oleic acid was also decreased com-pared with normal white matters and palmitic acid was decreased and linolenic acid was increased com-pared with normal grey matters.
Comparing the fatty acid composition of 'benign' meningioma or neurinoma with 'malignant' glioma, linoleic acid was decreased and stearic acid was slightly increased in glioma. Such increase of stearic acid was also present in metastatic cancer or menin-gosarcoma. So the increase of stearic acid may have some relation to the malignancy of the tumor tissues.
Among meningiomas, those of the second operation had also much increase of stearic acid than those of the first operation.
In a case of pineal teratoma, several kinds of isomers of C16 were present and in a case of pituitary adenoma, marked increase of arachidonic acid was noted.
