In order to investigate the metabolism of lipids in brain tumors the authors described a method of fatty acid analysis in the brain tissues and the CSF.

Lipids were extracted with CHCl3-methanol from the brain tissues or the CSF and then saponified with methanol-KOH into free fatty acids. Methylation of free fatty acids was done with methanol-BF3. Thus gained fatty acid methyl esters were separated with gas chromatograph and per cent composition was cal-culated by triangulation.

Ten fatty acids from myristic acid to arachidonic acid were identified in 5 cases of normal white matters and grey matters and in 10 cases of normal CSF.

Results of analysis were as follows:

Palmitic acid was increased and oleic acid was de-creased in grey matters in contrast with white matters.

Stearic acid and linoleic acid were increased and arachidonic acid was decreased in normal CSF in con-crast with white matters or gery matters.

Fatty acid composition in normal brain tissues (white and grey matters), CSF and plasma were different each other.
