Hetero-reinnervation of striated muscles with sym-pathetic fibers has been achieved by uniting the cervical sympathetic trunk with the hypoglossal or the spinal accessory nerve in rabbits. Spontaneous rhy-thmical potentials are electromyographically recorded in the muscles of the tongue and the sternocleid-mastoid. The rhythmical potentials immediately cease, when the cervical sympathetic trunk is cut. After the peripheral stump of the trunk is electrically stimulated, normal action potentials (M-waves) are recorded in the muscles. These findings show that the rhythmical potentials are related to sympathetic efferent impulses, and transmission of the impulses to the striated muscles is possible. It is concluded that sympathetic fibers can make functional connection with the peripheral end of any motor nerve supplying skeletal muscle.
