  • Look Inside

Hetero-reinnervation of striated muscles with parasympathetic fibers has been achieved by uniting the vagus with the peripheral stump of the hypoglossal nerve in rabbits. Electro-myographic records were made of activity in the muscles of the tongue, and the action po-tential patterns were pharmacologically ana-lyzed to obtain information as to the tone of the physiological efferent impulses from the vagus centers through parasympathetic pre-ganglionics. We find two kinds of efferent fi-bers in the vagus, fibers conveyed impulses which are peculiar to the vagus apparatus and fibers conveying respiratory impulses; the lat-ter are motor fibers of the vagus going thr-ough the recurrent laryngeal to the muscles of the larynx, and the former may be para-sympathetic preganglionics of the vagus. The normally present vagal tone is evaluated to about 10 or 20 impulses per second.
