  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The treatments of 49 schizophrenics and 5 manics with thioproperazine are reported.

Of 49 schizophrenics, 40 cases responded favorably to a program based on psychoseda-tive action of thioproperazine. The drug produced also marked improvement to all of 5 manic patients.

The main characteristics of the effective-ness of this drug are of improved affective rapport and spontaneity, showing remarkableamelioration in the depth of the patients' mental structure.

Especially 49 schizophrenics in the project were chronic nursing problems who had been resistant to all other previous therapies. Furthermore, we were impressed by the fact that apparently deteriorated patients regain-ed their "humanness" in a short period withslight maintenance dosages of this new psy-choparmacological agent. Thioproperazine checked also manic exaltation.

Compared with other phenothlazine deriva-tives, thioproperazine appears to produce drastic extrapyramidal signs which, how-ever, have a close connection with the effectiveness of the drug.
