  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The therapeutic efficacy of Levomeproma-zine, a derivative of the phenothiazine has been studies by the authors in certain psy-chiatric diseases, namely, 10 cases of schizo-phrenia, 6 cases of melancholia and a mania. The results were summarized as follows:

1. The drug was effective in 4 out of 6 cases of melancholia and such symptoms as emotional anxiety and agitation appear to be relieved. In mixed type, a case which showed manic excitement exhibited no marked sedative effect. In schizophrenias, the drug was effective 6 out of 10 cases particularly so in those fresh cases which showed emo-tional excitement whereas in chronic type in which autism and abulia were pronounced tend to make symptoms worse.

2. The foregoing results seem to indicate that the drug is most effective in those cas-es of which symptoms were chiefly associa-ted with severe depression of bodily sensa-tion and agitation, and posessed of different sedative effect unlike the other phenothia-zine drugs. On the other hand, it showed less effect on neurotic depression or hysteri. cal melancholia.
