  • Look Inside

A mild case of Tortionspasm is reported and discussed.

The patient is a 14 years old Japanese girl who has been afflicted since the age of ten. She first noted characteristic involuntary movements when she started to run at an athletic meeting. Since the original attack the involuntary movements come when she moves suddenly in situation where there is tension or emotional shock. She just becomes stiff and all motion ceases for a few seconds. This is followed by a show twisting of the upper part of the body, arm and head.

She has never lost consciousness during the attack.

Hysteria, Athetose double, Chorea minor and Pseudosclerosis were ruled out on the basis of clinical findings.

In Japan, since S. Araki reported the first case in 1924, about 15 cases of this disease have been reported. A case reported by S.Nakagawa in 1931 presented with involuntary movements associated with sudden voluntary movements. My case seems to milder than that one.
