  • Look Inside

We studied on the histological findings of the brain of a rabbit which had fallen into traumatic shock caused by repeated blows on the thigh. We recognized little, histopatho-logical changes in the brain in the area where the blood is supplied by A. carotis hit., but a marked change is observed in the area of A, vertebralis i.e. midbrain, cerebellum, pons, medulla oblongata, especially in the dorsal nucleus of vagus. These facts accord with the haemodynamical findings of the brain obtai-ned by physiological measurement of blood flow through both arteries in our depart-ment. That is, in the shock, the blood flow of A. carotis int. shows no remarkable change or rather it stagnates, while the irrigation region of A. vertebralis which includes the situation of the vital centre concerned with respiration and circulation, in medulla oblo-ngata, tends to a marked anemia. Such re-gional circulatory failure of the brain en-dorses a great reference to the process of shock.

Thus, the remarkable transformation of nucleus dorsalis nervi vagi is an important agent for the irreversibility of shock and makes us histologically acknowledge the fai-lure of blood circulation of A. vertebralis.
