抄録 SUN☺D研究は，未治療うつ病に対する抗うつ薬の初期投与量，および初期治療で効果がない場合の治療戦略に関して探索した，わが国発の大規模臨床試験である。2,000人以上の参加者を組み入れてその追跡を行い，また無作為割付を二段階設けるなど，その研究デザインにはさまざまな工夫を要した。
本稿ではこれら研究デザインにおける工夫の概要を解説する。
