Patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) have high rates of depression, with percentages reported at 30-40%. Depression has been reported to be the most important factor influencing quality of life in PD. Those diagnosed with and treated for depression in PD show a large influence of this treatment in the later stages of their PD care. According to the guidelines of the Japanese Nerve Society, Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), and dopamine agonists are the recommended treatment for depression in patients with PD, but many experience problems with effectiveness and tolerability. Here, we administered mirtazapine to 16 patients with PD complicated with depression, out of a cohort of 121 patients with PD visiting our hospital outpatient department. A good overall result was achieved, and the treatment was considered effective.
