We examined the possible association between the obsessive-compulsive (OC) personality and cognitive function in patients with mood disorders. A questionnaire of the OC personality, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) were administered to 43 patients (mean age 39.7±11.9, 24 males and 19 females/29 major depressive disorder and 14 bipolar disorder). The patients with high OC score (n=22) showed significantly higher cognitive functions such as performance intelligence quotient, verbal memory, visual memory, and general memory than those patients with low OC score, although the former had more severe depressed symptoms than the later. Our results suggest that OC personality can be a character subtyping patients with mood disorders and those patients with high OC personality may have relatively high cognitive functions despite severe depressed symptoms.
