The efficacy and safety of continuation and maintenance of modified electroconvulsive therapy (mECT) for 18 patients with mood disorder was retorospectively examined. Approximately 80% of them were resistant to psychotropic medication. The mean duration of continuation and maintenance of mECT was 1.1 years (4.1 times per year). Especially, it might be important to induce continuation of mECT actively for 6 months after its initiation. The results of the present study suggest that the induction of continuation and maintenance of mECT for patients with refractory mood disorder may lead to shortening the length of hospitalization and reduction of dosage of antidepressants without increasing adverse events. This therapy can improve QOL of such patients and lead to better medical economic outcome.
