Patients with developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sometimes have difficulty travelling on airplanes because of their impaired social interaction and communication, sensory sensitivity, inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. We developed a training program to provide patients with developmental disorders with the necessary skills to travel safely by airplane. A pilot study was conducted with five patients (8-10 years old) with developmental disorders (four with ASD and one with ADHD) and their caregivers. We found that all patients and their caregivers acquired positive dispositions towards airplanes, and the training provided the skills to travel by air with confidence. We think that our program is useful. Moreover, the establishment of a support system for patients with developmental disorders who wish to travel by air is needed.
