Reducing stigma against individuals with mental illness is a major task in public health. The authors examined the attitudes toward individuals with mental illness among medical students. Attitudes were compared between 47 students who had learned the lecture and 73 students who did not learned psychiatry lectures using the Attitudes toward Mental Disorder scale(AMD). As a results, the social distance for individuals with mental illness is significantly closer in the students who learned psychiatry(t(113)=2.16, p<.05). Our study suggested that the knowledge of mental illness is related to acceptance of individuals with mental illness.
