This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Attitudes to Suicide Prevention Scale (ASP-J) and investigate its psychometric properties. We enrolled 145 health professionals who attended our training programs for suicide prevention to assess the ASP-J and found that it had good internal consistency. In addition, negative attitudes toward suicide prevention were improved through training. The ASP-J scores were associated with the “alteration” factor of the short version of the Suicide Intervention Responce Inventory (SIRI-JS) and the score of confidence in suicide prevention. Furthermore, the experiences of providing counseling to and consulting suicide attempters and survivors were related to better attitudes. In conclusion, the ASP-J has validity and reliability, but further research is needed to explore other related variables and improve the psychometric properties.
