This study aimed to determine whether a poor mental health status among managers is associated with their need to have a consultation in an individual education setting. Between July 1,2001, and January 31,2005, a self-reported questionnaire survey, which was part of an individual mental health education, was conducted among 89 managers employed at a single workplace in Fukuoka.
Eighty-two men were included in the analysis. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate whether the type of job, the score on the 12-item General Health Questionnaire, satisfaction with work life, and satisfaction with family life were associated with the managers’ need to have a consultation regarding their own mental health. The analysis was adjusted for the following potential confounding factors:age, prior attendance at lectures on mental health, and experience in dealing with the mental problems.
Of the 82 subjects, 19 managers (23.2%) desired to have a consultation. A poor mental health status was found to be associated with this desire (p=0.048). The results of this analysis suggest that an individual education program may offer consultation oppotunities for managers with poor mental health.
