This study aimed to clarify adaptive and maladaptive behaviors exhibited by children in residential foster care institutions in Japan and examine how such behaviors are related to various attributes. The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Second Edition were administered to 45 children (21 male, 24 female) in residential foster care institutions in the Tokai area. The sample's mean score was significantly lower than the standard value for all adaptive behavior subdomains except that of the personal subdomain. Further, the mean of this sample was significantly higher than the standard value on the total Maladaptive Behavior Index as well as the Internalizing and Externalizing subdomains;these scores were also significantly higher in children who had exhibited conduct problems.
