Since 2000, the Korean government has implemented measures to counter internet dependency. Addiction to online games among young people is a major social problem in South Korea, having resulted in deaths and suicides. The Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has developed the K-scale, a Korean version of the Internet Addition Test (IAT), and has conducted this test nationwide since 2009.

The results of this test were used to screen people who tended to become addicts. A 12-day (11 nights) camping and hospitalization program has been developed to treat Internet addiction. From November 2011, a shut-down system for people less than 16 years of age has been discussed. In Japan, there is a latent problem of internet addiction via cell phones. In the future, it will become necessary to take concrete measures to counter internet addiction in Japan, using the Korean measures as a reference.
