Smoking situation of the psychiatric patient in Japan is not known enough. In March 2007, we did questionnaire investigation to 361 psychiatric outpatients treated at Morioka Municipal Hospital, and 315 patients answered that. The present smoking rate of men was 42.1%, of the women was 18.6%, of alcohol dependence patients was about 70%. About 80% present smokers scored more than five points of TDS (Tobacco Dependence Screener) score, and about 40% present smokers hoped to stop smoking "romptly" or "less than 6 months". Most of the past smokers gave up smoking for reasons of the disease or health problems. It is suggested that more mental disease present smokers were tobacco dependence, but many of them have interesting for cessation of smoking. It may lead more mental disease smokers to smoking cessation that we do non-smoking education about health damage and prescribe smoking cessation medicines.
