Patient with childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) have many more neurobiological abnormalities than patient adult-onset schizophrenia. COS may be represent a more homogeneous population. High levels of language and motor developmental skill impairments are noted in patients with COS who also have pervasive developmental disorder(PDD). To determine the impact of comorbidity with PDD on the clinical features of schizophrenia, we conducted a retrospective case control study comparing inpatients who had COS comorbid with PDD and inpatients who had COS but not. Patients with COS and PDD showed a higher incidence of obsessive and compulsive symptoms during the prodromal period of schizophrenia and experienced visual hallucinations as well as cenesthopathy during the psychotic period.
