The Shiga Prefectural Mental Health Care Center has been organizing family consultations since manifesting social withdrawal syndrome 1999. To understand the effect of such consultations, hand-written questionnaires have been collected from anonymous participants through the post. Ninety percent of socially withdrawn people were male, and their average age at the beginning of the withdrawal was eighteen. Over 70% had had an experience of school refusal. Fifty percent of the population answered that they saw some improvement. Although more than 60% of the people in the relatively young age group of 16 to 25 year-olds reported some improvement, but those in the late-twenties and above group seemed to be more stagnant. About 90% of the people answered that the consultations were helpful because they seemed to improve their understanding of social withdrawal and allowed them to feel sympathy and support from other participants who had the same problem.
