  • Look Inside

Fourteen cases of acute pulmonary embolism follow-ing air travel (Economy class syndrome) were reported. Two cases were males and the other twelve cases werefemales. Most of the cases were older than 40 years andsmaller than 160cm. All of them flew over 8 hours ineconomy class. Twelve cases had risk factors such as apast history of pulmonary embolism, leg varices, malig-nancy, presence of chronic disease, taking an oral con-traceptive, smoking and dehydration. In most cases, pulmonary embolism occurred when they left their seatsfor the first time after a long time in a sitting position.Their symptoms were dyspnea, chest pain, palpitationand loss of consciousness. They were treated with hepa-rin and/or urokinase until they recovered. To preventeconomy class syndrome, travelers should be advised todrink adequate fluids, avoid smoking and alcohol, remove tight clotting and to take exercise such aswalking and stretching their limbs.
