For the purpose of prescribing the physical exercise for patients with congenital heart disease, 212 healthy school boys and girls, 6 to 18 years of age, were performed on the maximal exercise testing by bicycle ergometer, and obtained the normal ranges of the exercise tolerance capacity.

The mean values of the maximal heart rates were 191±12 (mean±SD) beats/min for the boy and 191±11 beats/min for the girl, ranging from 180 to 220 beats/min. There was no significant correla-tionship between the maximal heart rate and the age. The maximal systolic blood pressure correlated significantly with the age. The maximal oxygen consumptions in the boy increased linearly with age, whereas they in the girl increased to the peak level at the age of 13 to 14 years. The total work, the rate pressure product and the oxygen pulse increased linearly with an older age in the boy. In the girl, however, the total work and rate pressure product attained to the peak level at the age of 14 to 15 years, and the oxygen pulse was at the age of 10 to 11 years. In conclusion, the peak of the cardiopulmonary function may be at the age of 16 to 18 years for the boys, and 10 to 11 years for the girl.
