  • Look Inside

A method was developed which measures cardiac output by indicator dilution technique using alveolar ether as a representative of blood ether partial pressure after ether in saline was injected in a bolus into a central vein. A low concentration of ether, which appears into the alveolar gas with no apparent hemodynamic effect, was measured continuously using a mass-spectro-meter, and yielded an indicator dilution curve. A comparison between this method and thermo-dilution method resulted in a correlation coeffici-ent of 0.8935, while the regression equation was Y=1.33 X-0.39 in 66 measurements, X being the value by thermodilution.

Compared with other methods using soluble gases, this method has a distict advantage, that it reguires no special respiratory manoever, there-by making clinical application in ICU and in the operating room feasible.
