1. An improved apparatus for the external counting of the radioactive isotope was devised, which ena- bled us to make a digital recording with an increased accuracy and without a time delay. This ap- paratus was proved to be adequate for the external measurement of the radioactive isotope as well as for the successive determinations (Fig. 1, 2, 4).

2. Some fundamental problems concernig the external measurements of cardiac output in man were investigated. The placement of the collimator focusing directly over the apex of the heart and the calibration at 5 minute were found to be most appropriate (Fig 7, 8, 9. Table 1).

3. Taking these results into account, the cardiac output was determined by means of external technic in 26 cases including normal subjects and patients with heart failure, anemia or hyperthyroidism. The values obtained were in reasonable agreement with those of direct technic except in cases with severe heart failure (Table 2, Fig. 9, 10).

4. Successive determinations of cardiac output were performed in 6 cases before and after the intravenous injection of aminophylline. The response to the drug was different between the normal subjects and the patients with heart failure (Fig. 12, 13).
