In Japan, the Japanese Respiratory Society(JRS)reference equations are recommended for Japanese adults, and the Japanese Society of Pediatric Pulmonology(JSPP)reference equations are recommended for Japanese children. However, the two equations are not continuous, and recommendations for children below six years of age are lacking. To address these issues, we substituted age and average height +/- two standard deviations to the reference equations, compared the coefficient of determination, and used spirometry data from The University of Tokyo Hospital from 2006 to 2009. We recommend using the Zapletal equations for children three to five years old, the JSPP equations for 6 to 18-year-olds, the Tamura equations for 19 and 20-year-olds, and the JRS reference equations for those over 20 years old.
