A female patient in her 70s was referred to our facility for a close examination of a subepithelial esophageal tumor that was detected during a preoperative CT(computed tomography)scan for cecal cancer. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a large 60-mm mass lesion just above the gastroesophageal junction. Some areas exhibited a relatively strong contrast effect, whereas others that were inside the mass exhibited poor contrast effect. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed a tumor originating from the fourth layer of the esophageal wall, and endoscopic ultrasound needle aspiration was performed to confirm the diagnosis. Pathologically, the tumor was composed of the proliferation of neoplastic spindle cells that are immunohistochemically positive for CD(cluster of differentiation)117 and CD34, and negative for alpha-smooth muscle actin, desmin, and S100 proteins. Hence, the patient was diagnosed with esophageal gastrointestinal stromal tumor, which is a rare mesenchymal esophageal tumor.
